Wellness Digest #24: WHO’s Covid-19 Update, Hyaluronic Acid, And New Travel Options

Welcome to this week’s digest. Anyone else feel like September did a stealth move and just … appeared? I love ‘back-to-school’ energy, but am holding on to this last little bit of summer with the holiday weekend ahead. (Let’s hold off on goals for the new season until next week, shall we?) Here’s this week’s list:

HEALTH
The devastating news of actor Chadwick Boseman’s death from colon cancer rocked our world last week. He not only entertained but inspired us, starring in Black Panther43Marshall, and other excellent films. A true hero both on and off-screen. Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among men and women combined in the US. Check out these resources to learn more about screening and other important data.

Covid-19 Update: This past week the World Health Organization released its findings on how Covid-19 mortality rates are significantly reduced by the use of steroids.

FOOD/NUTRITION
Mushrooms are an easy way to add important vitamins and minerals like vitamin D, potassium, and selenium to your diet. They’re also great for adding ‘texture’ or ‘meatiness’ to your meals if you are following a more plant-based diet. I typically rely on simple white or shitake mushrooms but here’s a list of  13 types of mushrooms to help you experiment and explore!

SELF-CARE
Use this 10-minute body scanning meditation to help ground you in moments of overwhelm or anxiety. I love that you can do all or just part of it to get to a place of calm.  Here’s a key mantra to repeat to yourself any time of day: ground, breathe, settle, soothe.

WATCH: The documentary Women Make Film on TCM is a treasure trove of filmmaking with excellent narration by Tilda Swinton. It’s 14 hours long but broken up into weekly segments that air every Tuesday night. If that’s too much of a commitment, don’t miss the trailers on their website! (Also available on AppleTV.)
ART: One of my favorite French street artists goes by the name “Invader” and is known for his mosaics inspired by ’80s video games. You can find them all over Paris, and he just took over the city of Marseille with new work.
TRAVEL: As travel restrictions slowly ease up, many are opting for home rentals over hotels. Marriott recently entered the homestay market and, according to AFAR magazine, is getting great reviews due to the consistency of their inventory and excellent cleaning protocols. Always great to have options.
