Wellness Digest #42: Natural Cough Cures, The Science of Happiness, Clean Beauty by MERIT

Welcome to this week’s digest. January is always the longest and darkest month. Hang in there – we’ll get through it. Covid burnout is real and if you feel like this is where you’re at here’s a great listen from NPR’s “The Takeaway,” with Tanzina Vega. You’re not alone. Okay, let’s get to this week’s list!

WELLNESS

It’s the season of coughs so I thought I would share some natural remedies with you. I included the image above of a “Thyme Cocktail” as the herb thyme is a wonderful natural remedy for a cough. Flavanoids found in the leaves help relax throat muscles and reduce inflammation. Try making thyme tea with a  couple of twigs steeped in hot water for 10 minutes. The taste can be a bit bracing but try to soldier on as it really will help. Here are some more natural remedies.

And, some helpful information about the new Covid-19 variants and what they mean for our health going forward.

FOOD + NUTRITION

If you are looking for a way to move away from using plastic wrap for food storage, here are some silicone bowl and pan covers that work great. They can go in the oven, dishwasher and are microwave safe. They’re also BPA and BPS-free and are naturally anti-microbial. The neutral colors are great.

With new editor-in-chief Dawn Davis at the helm, Bon Appetit is getting some fresh energy. Here are their most popular recipes from 2020 and a great piece for those of us (myself included) who buy too many avocadoes and how to make (delicious!) use of them.

SELF-CARE

Yale’s most popular course is a course on happiness. “The Science of Well Being” (taken by more than 3 million people) is now being offered for free on the online learning platform Coursera. The class teaches participants to “increase your own happiness and build more productive habits.”

I often fall off the wagon when it comes to weight training. But I’m recommitting. Slowly. I’m trying this 30-day arm toning challenge. What I like is that there are many different movements featured. My strategy will be to choose 3-5 and commit. Some require weights, some use your body weight. Let’s pace ourselves and get toned.

JOIE DE VIVRE

BEAUTY: Merit is a new minimalist beauty line that is clean, vegan, and cruelty-free. It has a neutral palette with six products. Their motto? “Look like yourself… but better.” As a design junkie, I also love the packaging. Nice 3-minute tutorial video as well.

MUSIC: Well it looks like the release of the final James Bond film, No Time To Die, is delayed again. However, the theme song, sung by Billie Eilish, is out. It’s gorgeous. Enjoy!
